30 IU teachers hurt in BCL attack

KUSHTIA, Jan 12 (UNB): At least 30 teachers of Islamic University (IU) were injured in an attack by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists at the teachers' lounge of the university Saturday. The BCL men launched the attack on the teachers while they were talking to the journalists at about 3.0 pm over the students' demand for resumption of classes and examinations. IU teachers' association president Prof Dr Najibul Haq, general secretary Dr Iqbal Hossain were among the injured. Earlier, a section of the students of the university blocked Kushtia-Jhenidah highway for four hours demanding resumption of classes and examinations of the university. The general students started their programme in front of the main gate of the university on Kushtia-Jhenidah highway at about 11 am. Several hundred vehicles got stranded on the both sides of the highway due to the blockade. The students removed their blockade at about 3 pm following a fruitful meeting between the teachers' association leaders and the university authorities. The teachers decided to start taking classes from Sunday after the meeting. Academic activities at the university came to a halt about four and a half months back as the teachers of the university under the banner of Islamic University Teachers Association (IUTA) started agitation demanding removal of Vice-Chancellor Prof M Alauddin, Pro-Vice chancellor Prof M Kamal Uddin and treasurer Prof Md Shahjahan Ali for their alleged involvement in irregularities in the recruitment of 132 teachers and officials at the university. Later, the VC and the Pro-VC were removed but the teachers continued their movement and went on work abstention demanding removal of the treasurer. Meanwhile, a section of general students started movement demanding resumption of academic activities of the university.
