349 women fell victim to violence in April

A total of 349 women fell victim to violence against women in April last with rape incidents topping the list during the period, according to Bangladesh Mahila Parishad (BMP).

The women's' group in its latest statement issued on Thursday said a total of 97 women were raped and 24 of them were gang raped during the month. "And four were killed after being raped," it said, mentioning that the BMP made the monthly report based on reports published in 13 national newspapers. It said rape attempts were made on 8 women and 6 others were assaulted physically.

According to the statement, about 56 women and children were killed for various reasons and 30 women became victim of violence for dowry while 16 others were killed for dowry.

At the same time, five housemaids were physically tortured and three of them were murdered after being tortured physically.
