Malaysian police has rounded up 39 Bangladeshi workers after a gang fight that seriously wounded seven people, including two locals of that country.
"A gang fight involving Bangladeshis and locals ensued near a foreign workers' hostel resulting in two locals being seriously injured," said a report of the Star Online newspaper of Malaysia Tuesday.
The fight started near a foreign workers' hostel in Taman Kota Puteri, Masai at 10.20pm on Monday. Police rounded up 39 Bangladeshi workers after the clash.
Che Yusoff Che Ngah, a senior CID officer, said the two local workers and five Bangladeshis suffered injuries and were brought to a nearby clinic for treatment.
"Initial investigations showed that that four locals, who were hired to relocate the workers to another place, had injured some of the workers," he said.
"This angered the workers who then beat them up," he said adding that no weapons were used.
He said the Bangladeshi and two locals were detained under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting, adding that they would be remanded for two weeks.
"Quick police action prevented the incident from becoming worse. Teams from the Seri Alam District headquarters were dispatched to resume control and arrest the ones involved," he said.
Director General of the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET) Md Abdul Malek said he was not aware of the incident in Malaysia.
But he said his office will contact Bangladesh High Commission in Malaysia to get details of the incident and take measures.
