39m people using internet

Revealing that country's   39 million (3.90 crore) people are currently using internet, State Minister for Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Junaid Ahmed Palak Monday said internet connections in all the districts will be ensured  through fibre optic cables by 2015, reports UNB.
"Internet connections in all the district towns and 197 upazilas have already been ensured through fibre optic cables," he said while addressing a seminar in the conference room of SME Foundation at Karwanbazar in the city.
The junior minister said about 24 percent of the country's population are now using internet whereas the rate was only 6 percent in 2009.
He also said there are 2 lakh freelancers in the Information and  Technology sector in Bangladesh which is third in the world in terms of number.
The government has taken an initiative to produce 50,000 more freelancers in the sector, Palak said, adding that it has started implementing another project to create 35,000 skilled workforce in the sector.
SME Foundation Managing Director Syed Mohammad Ehsanul Karim, president of Bangladesh Computer Society Dr Mahfuzul Islam and Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) President Shamim Ahmed, among others, spoke at the function.
