Joint forces have arrested 45 members of criminal gangs, including 'teen gangs', from different parts of the capital on charges of mugging and extortion, report agencies.

Since the fall of the Awami League government, the Mohammadpur area has become one of the most crime-prone areas in the capital, with incidents of gunfire, robbery, theft, and armed assaults becoming a regular phenomenon.

In the last month alone, at least three individuals were killed in shootouts while several others have sustained injuries from gunfire related to illegal drug dealing conflicts.

A video of armed individuals robbing a mini-supermarket in Basila circulated on social media on Friday night.

The joint forces comprising the Army, Rab, and police conducted the drives in Mohammadpur's Dhaka Udyan, Chand Uddyan, and Nobodoy Housing areas on Saturday night, said an ISPR release.

"A total of 45 members of robbers, extortionists, and juvenile gangs were arrested from Dhaka Udyan, Chand Udyan, and Navodaya Housing in Mohammadpur area in a joint operation led by army personnel, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-2), and police," a release of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said Sunday evening.

The Bangladesh Army is working with impartiality and professionalism in the prevailing situation of the country with the aim of preventing extrajudicial activities and maintaining the rule of law, as well as controlling the overall security and law and order situation of public life and important government facilities.

The operation of the joint forces was conducted in a well-planned manner with the aim of bringing relief to the lives of the inhabitants of Mohammadpur who were going through a sense of insecurity in recent times, it said.

During the operation, 45 alleged criminals were arrested with nine domestic sharp weapons from the Mohammadpur area last night, the release added.

It is mentioned here that the law enforcement agencies under the Mohammadpur, Adabar, and Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police stations detained 152 criminals and recovered 18 firearms, 271 rounds of ammunition, 172 types of various domestic and foreign weapons, one grenade, and a huge amount of narcotics.

After the preliminary interrogation, the detainees were handed over to the police stations concerned.

The operation is being conducted as a part of regular patrolling and operations of the joint forces under 'In Aid to Civil Power' to implement the directives of the current interim government, the release added.
