Jute workers Saturday announced a 48-hour strike at the state-owned jute mills from February 28 in protest against the government's dilly-dallying tactics over implementation of wage-commission award.
They announced the fresh agitation programmes at a press briefing in the city.
"We'll enforce 48 -hour strike from February 28 at the country's 19 jute mills," Shahidullah Chowdhury, convener of Patkal Sramik Karmachari Sangram Parishad (PSKSP), a body of nearly 45000 jute mills workers announced.
This work abstention by the workers in the state-owned mills will incur production losses worth about Tk 1.0 billion, sources hinted.
The workers alleged that the government wants to implement wage commission award from mid-of 2010. But they demanded the implementation of the wage structure from a year back.
The jute sector leaders warned that they would announce tough programmes after the shut-down.
'We'll announce tougher programmes including non-stop strike at the mills to realise our demands', Mr Shahidullah added.
Joint convener Lutfor Rahman and Shofiuddin Ahamad were present at the at the press briefing.
