544 killed, 867 injured in Feb road accidents: RSF

At least 544 people, including 79 women and 82 children, were killed and 867 others injured in road accidents last month (February), according to a report of the Road Safety Foundation (RSF).

The casualties occurred in some 583 road accidents across the country, the report published on Wednesday said.

Of the total, 206 people died in 187 motorcycle accidents, which is 37.86 per cent of the total deaths. Motorcycle accident rate is 32.07 per cent.

As many as 109 pedestrians were killed in road accidents, which is 20.03 per cent of the total fatalities. 74 drivers and assistants, 13.60 per cent, were killed.

Meanwhile, during this time six people were killed and two others injured in four boat accidents. And, 28 people were killed and 66 injured in 34 railway accidents.

The Road Safety Foundation prepared the report based on data from 9 national dailies, 7 online news portals and electronic media.

According to the vehicle-wise statistics of accidents, motorcycle drivers and riders are 206 (37.86 per cent), bus passengers 23 (4.22 per cent).

According to the Foundation's monitoring and analysis, 173 (29.67 per cent) of the accidents occurred on national highways, 234 (40.13 per cent) on regional roads, 93 (15.95 per cent) on rural roads, 72 (12.34 per cent) on city roads and 11 (1.88 per cent) occurred in other locations.

The number of vehicles involved in the accidents is 866.

Chittagong division has the highest number of accidents 126 and Dhaka division has the highest number of fatalities 120.
