CHATTOGRAM, Apr 15: The government has imposed a ban on fishing in the Bay of Bengal and maritime territory for 58 days from April 15 to June 11 next.

The ban on catching sea fish including hilsa began across the country on Tuesday (April 15).

Fishing is banned to ensure the safe spawning of the national fish of Bangladesh during its peak breeding period; the government has imposed the ban in the water territory of Bay of Bengal. The ban will remain in place till June 11 next.

Leader of the Fishing Boat Association Mostak Ahamod said, "More than 7,000 engine boats returned to the jetties today as the government has imposed a ban on fishing in the sea for 58 days again. But some boats which are still in deep-sea will return today or within nest two days."

He said around 0.8 million fishermen are engaged in sea fishing. The families of the fishermen will suffer due to the ban on fishing. Allocation of rice and foods should be increased for the fishermen during the period of ban on sea fishing."

Officials of the Department of Fisheries Chattogram district said that the government used to impose ban on fishing in the Bay of Bengal every year to preserve fish stock and ensure proper breeding.

According to the Department of Fisheries, the ban on operation of engine boats will be in force for 58 days.

Fish stock will increase due to the ban on fishing during the breeding period.

Every fisherman will get 25 kg rice during the ban period.

During this period, the taskforce will conduct drives round the clock to check violation of the ban while the mobile court will conduct drives alongside it.

The officials concerned also hoped that the implementation of the programme will play a role in increasing the production of fishes.

It may be mentioned that the quantity of fish is increasing significantly day by day due to the ban on fishing during the brooding season.

As per Rule 55 (2) of the Maritime Fisheries Act 1983, the government used to impose a ban on fishing to increase the fisheries in sea."
