COX'S BAZAR, Sept 13: Six people were killed in separate landslides in Cox's Bazar's Sadar Upazila and a Rohingya refugee camp in Ukhiya.

The heavy showers and water-logging disrupted the normal life of the city, with empty streets and halted car movement due to water on the roads.

Cracks have appeared on most of the hills in the district due to heavy rainfall, leading to landslides in several areas.

Three members of Mizanur Rahman's family, a local resident, died in a landslide in Jhelongja South Dikkul area on Thursday.

The deceased were Ankhi Mani (28), daughter Miha Jannat (12), and Latifa Islam (9).

Mizan's house was located at the foot of the hill.

In addition, three houses were destroyed by a landslide in Ukhia No. 14 Hakim Para Rohingya camp, resulting in the deaths of three members of the same family.

Thousands of homes and businesses in the city were flooded, with goods worth millions destroyed. Floods also affected 8 upazilas, including Cox's Bazar Sadar.

Heavy rain has persisted in Cox's Bazar for the past few days. A total of 453 millimeters of rainfall was recorded in the district from 12 noon on Thursday to 12 noon on Friday, marking the highest recorded amount of rainfall in the current season.

Approximately 85 per cent of the district town area has been submerged in water due to heavy rains, with at least 40 side roads, including the main road and the road adjacent to the beach, submerged.

All roads in the hotel-motel zone on the beach were also submerged, leaving at least 20,000 tourists stranded in more than 500 hotels and motels in Kalatali.

A journalist said that such flooding in the city has not been seen in the last 30 years.
