6 ex-Oriental Bank officials get 7 yrs in prison

Seven people, including six high officials of the Oriental Bank (now the ICB Islamic Bank), have been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for a loan fraud, reports agencies.

A court in the city Tuesday sentenced six officials of former Oriental Bank  to seven years' imprisonment in case filed for misappropriating Tk 10 million. A businessman was sentenced to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment.

Judge of the Special Court-4 Aminul Islam pronounced the verdict.

The convicts are former vice-president of the bank Shah Mohammad Harun, its former senior assistant vice-president Abul Quashem Mahmudullah, assistant vice-president Mohammad Fazlur Rahman, senior executive vice-president Mahmud Hossain, executive vice-president Quamrul Hossain and former deputy managing director Imamul Haque.

Besides, the court sentenced Mohammad Bakar Hossain, a director of 'Messrs Bakar Hossain', to 10 years' imprisonment on the same charges.

The court fined all the convicts Tk 1,428,572 each.

According to the case details, The bank officials disbursed a loan to the tune of Tk 10 million to Messrs Bakar Hossain which had no existence from April 2005 to June 2006. Thus, they misappropriated the money in collusion with each other.

Deputy Director of the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) SMM Akhter Hamid Bhuiya filed a case against them with Motijheel Police Station on December 30, 2006.

On January 6, 2013, the ACC submitted chargesheet against them.
