Six more BDR members were remanded into CID custody for five days Monday, in connection with the Peelkhana mutiny case, reports bdnews24.com.

Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Md Abdur Rahim issued the order on a petition from investigation officer Abdul Qahhar Akhand.

Qahhar said the accused looted an arsenal inside the BDR headquarters during the armed revolt on Feb 25-26 that left at least 60 army personnel deputed to the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) dead or missing.

The six remanded Monday are sepoys Fashiur Rahman, Sirajul Islam, Imran and Shah Alam, BDR medical aide Jamiruddin and cook Shahjahan.

Lalbagh police filed the case on Feb 28 against five named suspects, including one of the alleged ringleaders DAD Touhidul Alam, and 1,000 unnamed BDR men for the mutiny.

The five were remanded into CID custody on Mar 3. Two more BDR men were remanded for five days Sunday.

Meanwhile, the government inquiry team into the BDR mutiny will take another seven working days to submit findings.

"The investigation committee needed more time for its report," additional home secretary Golam Hossain, also a committee member, said Monday.

The 11-member team Sunday sought more time for its report that was due Monday.

According to the new deadline, it will continue with its work until March 19, as three holidays fall in this period : Eid-e-Miladunnabi on March 10 and a two-day weekend.

Law Minister Shafiq Ahmed Monday reiterated that the trial process in the BDR mutiny case depends on findings of the ongoing investigation, but there may be court martials, if necessary.

"The case will go to trial as quickly as possible," he told reporters at the secretariat.

"At the moment, it is not possible to comment on how long it will take to complete the trial. But the government will ensure fair trial within shortest possible time," he said.

"The trial process will start once the CID submits its investigation reports. Those involved in the incident will be tried with an iron hand, none will be spared," Shafiq added. Another report said a border guard hung himself at the Peelkhana headquarters early Monday.

The dead man was 50-year-old Nayek Subedar Mojammel Haq. Lalbagh police received news of the suicide at around 8am.
