70 pc school attendance needed for public exams: MoE

The government has directed the country's educational institutions to allow students to sit for public examinations despite their failure in the school tests.

The ministry of education (MoE) issued the directive on Tuesday. It contained fresh criteria for the academic institutions to select students for the public examinations.

"Despite failure at school tests, all the educational institutions must allow students who attended 70 per cent classes during an academic calendar," the ministry in its directive said.

It said the authorities have found that some schools were dropping students from public examinations in the name of 'failure' in their own school tests prior to the public examinations.

However, the educational institutions must take the pre-test examinations with due importance, the MoE in its directive said adding that the concerned teachers should be show-caused for students' failure in the examinations.

"Besides, the unsuccessful students must be treated with special care," it noted.

The ministry said the government wants every student to get enrolled into the upper stage, completing the school life.

The directive also urged heads and managing bodies of private schools and colleges to hold a meeting within 30 days of the results of public examinations to evaluate performance of the teachers.

It also urged the concerned officials to provide performance reports to their respective higher officials in order to reach the education boards.

"The ministry would take tougher action against the schools or colleges in case of their failure to maintain the new guidelines accordingly," the authorities warned.
