One of the corridors of an abandoned Wapda building, housing some 101 stranded Pakistani families, collapsed near Journalists' Colony in Mirpur-11 in the city Saturday, trapping members of five of the families in their rooms, reports UNB.
A 20-foot passage on the 3rd floor of No. 4 building of Wapda collapsed at about 10:40am, blocking the exits of the five families.
On information, fire-fighters rushed to the spot and tried to rescue the members of the five Urdu-speaking families. However, they refused to come out in fear of losing their shelters.
Special Officer of the fire unit Syed Monirul Islam said the fire fighters were frequently requesting the trapped family members to get out but they did not respond until 12:30pm. "Where will we go after leaving this building?" said one of the trapped people.
