The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has initiated an inquiry into Mujibul Haque, former Railway Minister and former Member of Parliament (MP) for Cumilla-11, and A K M Bahauddin, former MP for Cumilla-6.
The inquiry also includes two others: Tahsin Bahar Shuchona, Bahauddin's daughter and former mayor of Cumilla City Corporation, and Kamal Hossain, former personal secretary to the ex-minister for local government, rural development, and cooperatives.
The ACC's decision to begin the inquiry was made in a meeting at its headquarters on Tuesday. ACC spokesperson Md Akhtarul Islam confirmed the details to The Financial Express.
The allegations against these individuals involve money laundering, abuse of power, irregularities in development projects, and amassing significant illegal wealth at home and abroad.
Mujibul Haque is accused of embezzling a large sum of money from various railway development projects by manipulating tenders and engaging in corrupt recruitment practices during his tenure as the railway minister.
According to a complaint lodged by lawyer Md. Zia Uddin, Haque acquired significant unexplained wealth in his name and the names of his family members. Based on these complaints, the ACC launched the investigation.
Similarly, Bahauddin, his daughter Tahsin, and Kamal Hossain face accusations of abusing power to engage in tender manipulation, recruitment scams, and irregularities in various development projects.
They are also suspects of money laundering and acquiring hundreds of millions in illegal assets at home and abroad, in their own names and in the names of their family members.
The ACC's intelligence unit has taken these allegations seriously, and has reviewed all related documents and evidence. The inquiry aims to uncover the full extent of their involvement in the misappropriation of public funds, breach of trust, and abuse of authority for personal gain.
The probe marks another step in the ACC's ongoing efforts to combat high-profile corruption in Bangladesh, particularly among influential public figures.
