ACC launches probe into former army chief Aziz

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) launched probe into former chief of army staff, and retired General, Aziz Ahmed and former Member of Parliament from Feni, Nizam Uddin Hazari, on the allegations of amassing huge wealth and misusing their power.

The ACC has decided to make comprehensive investigations after it has found initial evidence regarding the former army chief's involvement in wealth accumulation at home and abroad by abusing his power, officials said.

There are accusations against Mr Ahmed that he purchased houses and flats in various places, including the capital through corruption, unethical practices, and various irregularities through the misuse of power, according to the officials.

The former army chief has built luxurious bungalow at a cost of Tk 1.0 billion and owns house in Mirpur DOHS, they said.

Aziz Ahmed, who was Army Chief from June 25, 2018 to June 24, 2021, also has a house called Aziz Residence on Road No. 6 of Nikunj-1, Dhaka.

Apart from this, Mr Ahmed has also bought houses and hundreds of bighas of land in different areas of Dhaka in the name of his younger brother Tofayel Ahmed Joseph.

Meanwhile, the commission also decided to investigate the charges against Nizam Uddin Hazari, who is said to have obtained huge wealth in his name as well as his family name through corruption.

The primary investigation of the ACC intelligence has revealed information on Mr Hazari's illegal assets home and abroad.
