Accidents killed 539, injured 774 in Nov

A total of 539 people were killed and 774 others injured in 449 road, railway and waterway accidents across the country during the last month (November), reveals a passengers welfare body on Wednesday.

Of the total, 486 people were killed and 741 injured in 443 road accidents.

Railway accidents numbering 50 took lives of 52 people and injured 13.

Six accidents on waterways claimed lives of three persons and wounded 20.

Besides, four persons went missing during vessel journey. The passengers welfare body, Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity or BJKS, revealed the above-mentioned accounts that were prepared based on media reports.

Road accidents claimed lives of 157 drivers, 139 pedestrians, 72 women, 32 children, 25 transport workers, 25 students, 14 political leaders and activists, eight teachers, three physicians, five police personnel and one Ansar member.

Trucks, pickups and covered vans were involved with 26.76 per cent of the total road accidents while motorcycles caused 24.83 per cent accidents, buses 13.14 per cent, human haulers Nasimon and Karimon 11.69 per cent, CNG-run auto-rickshaws 9.93 per cent, battery-run rickshaws and easy bikes 9.29 per cent and cars, jeeps and microbuses 4.32 per cent.

Highest 20 road accidents in a single day occurred on November 19 that took lives of 28 people and left 23 people injured.

On the other hand, lowest nine road accidents in a single day took place on November 23 claiming lives of eight people and injuring 14.

Of the total road accidents, 55.08 per cent occurred due to hitting or ramming by vehicles while 22.57 per cent took place from head-on collision, 14.67 per cent due to plunging into roadside ditches and 6.55 per cent for miscellaneous reasons.

Of the road accidents, 51.01 per cent occurred on the regional highways, 22.57 per cent on the national highways and 21.89 per cent on the feeder roads.

Some 2.48 per cent of the road accidents took place in the capital while 1.13 per cent occurred in Chattogram city.

Nearly 0.90 per cent accidents occurred at the railway level crossings.
