BAGERHAT, Apr 30 (UNB): Mongla port, the second seaport of the country, which incurred losses since long, has taken some steps to make it efficient and vibrant, port sources and officials said.
The port incurred Tk 503.30 million losses in the last four years.
The measures included purchase of some machines to ease cargo and container handling and reduction of port charges.
Mongla Port Authority chairman Commodore M Faruq confirmed that charges for unloading goods have been reduced.
Besides, initiatives have been taken for dredging the Pashur River to ease vessel movement. Government has given yearly allocation of Tk 100 million for dredging, he said.
The chairman said recently some private cars and microbuses imported from Japan were unloaded at the port. Fertilizer-laden cargoes are also anchoring at the port now, he added.
In fiscal 2005-06, more than 130 ships anchored in the port followed by 110 ships in 2006-07, 95 ships in 2007-08, and 151 ships in 2008-09.
The port incurred loss of Tk 110.9 million in fiscal 2005-06, Tk 164 million in 2006-07, Tk 169.3 million in 2007-08 and Tk 59.1 million in 2008-09.
Mongla port was established at Chalna in 1950. Later, it was shifted to the bank of the Pashur River as the second seaport of the country in 1954.
