CHITTAGONG, Oct 29: Additional police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members were deployed in the port city and different parts of the district on Wednesday.
The deployment took place, as the Jamaat-Shibir men tried to disrupt common life, following announcement of the verdict against Jamat-e-Islami Amir Motiur Rahman Nizami for crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.
Police said 120 BGB members were deployed in six groups in the port-city.
Additional policemen were patrolling across the city and at Satkania, Lohagara, Sitakunda, Hathazari and Banskhali upazilas of the district.
The police also detained 17 activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir from different areas of the city. They tried to bring out processions, protesting the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) verdict on the day that pronounced death sentence for Nizami.
Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) deputy commissioner (HQ) Masud-ul-Hasan said 500 members of regular police, 500 of reserve police and 100 of industrial police were put on alert on Dhaka-Chittagong, Chittagong-Cox's Bazar and Chittagong-Khagrachhari highways to thwart any untoward incident.
The police also raided Darul Ulum Senior Madrasa, Chittagong Government College and Haji Mohsin Government College - strongholds of Shibir - and arrested seven activists from the madrasa.
There was no report of untoward incident from any part of the city and other areas of the district. The Jamaat-Shibir activists could not demonstrate in favour of the 3-day hartal - on Thursday, Sunday and Monday, police said.
