Attorney General Mahbubey Alam was laid to rest in the capital's Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals' Graveyard at around 1:20 pm on Monday.
Earlier on the day, his namaz-e-janaza was held on the Supreme Court premises where people from all walks of life bade farewell to the eminent jurist.
Mahbubey Alam passed away at 7.25 pm on Sunday at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka where he was under treatment after being infected with Covid-19.
His son Sumon Mahbub confirmed the news saying that the doctors declared his father Mahbubey Alam dead at 7:25 pm.
Around 11:00 am on Monday, his body was brought onto the Supreme Court Bar Association premises for namaz-e-janaza and paying last respect.
Military secretaries on behalf of President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid last respect to the attorney general by placing wreaths.
Among others, Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, Law Minister Anisul Huq, Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim, Railways Minister Nurul Islam Sujan, judges of the Appellate and High Court divisions of the Supreme Court, former Appellate Division judges, Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President AM Amin Uddin, Inspector General of Police Benazir Ahmed and Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam joined the janaza prayers and paid tribute to Mahbubey Alam by placing wreaths.
The two divisions of the Supreme Court suspended sessions on Monday in a tribute to Attorney General Mahbubey Alam. Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain made the announcement at around 9:45 am on Monday. No sessions would be held on Monday as part of the top court's homage to the attorney general, Justice Hossain said.
Mahbubey Alam had been receiving treatment at the CMH since September 04 after being infected with coronavirus. He was taken to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital on September 18 when his health condition suddenly deteriorated.
Mahbubey Alam had been the chief legal officer of the state for the longest time (2009-2020) in the history of Bangladesh. He was 71 years old. He left behind his wife, a son and a daughter.
