AG office reshuffled, most law officers fired

The caretaker government Wednesday reshuffled the overstaffed Attorney General Office (AGO), firing most law officers appointed allegedly on political considerations during the immediate-past coalition rule, reports UNB.
Confirming the changes, Attorney General (AG) Fida M Kamal, the principal government law officer, said that, after the changes, the total strength of law officers stood at 83, including the AG and the Additional AG.
The figure was 117 before the trimming, sources in the AGO office said.
In the reshuffle, five Assistant Attorneys-general appointed during the BNP-Jamaat regime have been elevated to Deputy Attorney General, said a notification issued today by the soliciting wing of the Ministry of Law.
"The President, in exercise of his powers, gave the appointments," it said.
Those promoted are Nahid Mahtab, Quamrunnessa, Nahid Yasmeen, Mubina Asaf and M Rezaul Islam.
In the shakeup, the President fired 26 Deputy Attorneys-General and 52 Assistant Attorneys-general and appointed some new law officers.
