Road communication between Dhaka and Chittagong remained cut for over three hours as several hundred people blocked the highway near Jatrabari area Tuesday in protest against a Rajuk's residential project.
The police said the people, whose houses could be affected due to construction of a new road by Rajdhani Unnayan Kartipakkha (RAJUK), came to the highway at about 8am and protested against the project by chanting anti-RAJUK slogans.
Several thousand buses, private cars and other public transports remained stranded on both sides of the highway causing suffering to people.
The protesters also demanded cancellation of the project.
During the demonstration near Shanir Akhra bridge, vehicular movement on the country's busiest Dhaka-Chittagong highway was disrupted seriously causing untold sufferings to the passengers.
On information, the police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control as the agitators went away on a promise that it would be decided after the forthcoming general election.
