AL MP Rafique gets 10 yrs in jail, BNP MP Millat six years

A Dhaka court Wednesday sentenced former AL lawmaker Md Rafiqul Anwar to 10 years in prison for illegal possession of firearms, whereas another special court sentenced former BNP lawmaker Rashiduzzaman Millat to six years for tax-dodge, reports bdnews24.com.
Judge Matiar Rahman of Metropolitan Special Tribunal-7 handed down Rafique's verdict in the presence of the convict, better known as 'Sona Rafique.'
According to the case details, joint-forces arrested Rafique on April 28 from Sea Queen Hotel in the city's Banani area, and seized a foreign handgun, two magazines and four rounds of ammunition from him.
Gulshan Police Station filed a case against him under the Arms Act the next day. Charges were framed on Sept 26.
"Though the accused was shown arrested on April 28, he was actually arrested on April 20 in Chittagong, which has been published in different newspapers, and also aired by the media," Rafique's lawyer Alim Mia said.
Meanwhile, BNP MP Millat was handed down five years in jail for concealing asset information, and fined Tk 2.0 million or a further one year in prison. He was sentenced to one year in jail, and a Tk 0.2 million fine or another three months on jail on the second charge of falsifying wealth information.
Judge Md Ashraf Hossain of Special Judges' Court-5, set up at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, gave the sentence that comes into force from the day of the convict's arrest or surrender.
