AL urges govt to take crucial decisions after consulting parties

Awami League (AL) Sunday urged the caretaker government to consult with the political parties before taking any decision on crucial national issues, reports UNB.

"If the government takes decision (on crucial issues) without consulting the political parties, it will commit a big mistake," acting AL General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam said, briefing journalists after a meeting of the party's presidium members, joint secretaries and organising secretaries.

AL presidium member Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury presided over the hour-long meeting held at the party's Dhanmondi office to discuss the party's organisational activities.

Mr Ashraful said the Awami League-backed candidates had won the recent elections to the four city corporations and the incumbent mayor of Chittagong City Corporation was also an AL leader.

"These prove that the majority population of the country supports the party. So, the government should not take any decision without consulting the Awami League," he mentioned.

He said the Awami League would send a letter to the Chief Adviser's office in a day or two seeking date for fresh dialogue on some crucial issues like permanent release of Sheikh Hasina and date for the parliamentary polls.

The AL leader said some 11 district units of the party were now in leadership crisis, as they could not hold their council due to state of emergency.

The Awami League central body had decided to arrange councils gradually to some such district units, he stated.

Mr Ashraful was highly critical of the government for a new rule that the winner in the local-body elections would have to sacrifice their party posts.

"Such a rule is completely undemocratic," he said, adding that the Awami League would file a writ petition with the High Court challenging the legality of the rule.

The Sunday's central body meeting had withdrawn suspension order on the activities of Sunamganj district Awami League with immediate effect, the acting AL general secretary said.

He said the meeting also decided that the expulsion order on some leaders of Rupganj Awami League in Narayanganj would continue until there was a party decision to the contrary.
