Alesha Mart chairman faces arrest warrant in cheque bounce case

FE REPORT | January 26, 2023 00:00:00

A Dhaka court on Wednesday issued an arrest warrant against the chairman of scam-hit e-commerce platform Alesha Mart, Manjurul Alam Sikder, in a case filed over cheque dishonour.

Judge of the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka, Sayed Mostafa Reza Nur, passed the order as the Alesha Mart chairman did not appear before the court complying with its earlier order.

The court asked the authorities concerned to submit a compliance report regarding the arrest of Manjurul Alam on March 27 next.

According to the case documents, the plaintiff ordered one motorcycle from the e-commerce site and paid the price given on the site in advance. But the e-commerce site failed to supply him the motorcycle in due time and subsequently gave him a cheque for Tk0.163 million.

The plaintiff tried to cash the cheque; however, it was bounced from the bank.

Then he sent a legal notice to the Alesha Mart claiming his money. As he did not get any response, he filed a case with the court on August 22 in 2022.

Taking the allegation in cognizance, the court issued a summon against Manjurul Alam to appear before it on January 25. However, he did not appear before the court on Wednesday.

Lawyer Miah Hossain appeared in the court proceedings on behalf of plaintiff Tofazzal Hossain, a private service holder.
