Allama Shafi laid to rest at Hathazari madrasa

CHATTOGRAM, Sept 19: Islamic scholar Allama Shah Ahmed Shafi was laid to rest at Hathazari madrasa after the janaza at the madrasa ground on Saturday afternoon.

Allama Ahmed Shafi died at a hospital in Dhaka on Friday and his body reached Chattogram on Saturday. Common people and followers of him started reaching Hathazari on Saturday morning.

The body was kept at the madrasa premises from 9 am till Johor prayers for the people and his followers to show their respect. Later, his namaz-e-janaza was held at 2 pm.

As per his last wishes, Ahmed Shafi was buried at Hathazari madrasa where he began his career as a teacher in 1946.

Thousands of people from different districts of the country came to attend the janaza.

The people of Chattogram, despite Shafi's political identity, were shocked at his death. Thousands gathered at Hathazari in the morning to see the body for the last time. People were mourning there.

The administration closed the movement of vehicles on Hathazari road since Saturday morning. People attended the janaza by walking mile after mile. 20 platoons of BGB men, RAB, police and magistrates were deployed to maintain the law and order at Hathazari.

DIG of Chattogram Range Md Anwar Hossain, Commanding Officer (CO) of RAB-7 Lt Colonel Md Moshiur Rahman, SP of Chattogram SM Rashidul Haque, Additional District Magistrate Badiul Alam and top officials of law enforcing agencies were present at the spot from morning till completion of Allama Shafi's janaza.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Hathazari Md Ruhul Amin said, "Despite a huge number of people who came to Hathazari to attend the janaza of Allama Shafi, the law enforcing agencies controlled the situation. There were no unwanted incidents at Hathazari on Saturday."
