Standing Aman crops in 4.8 million hectares of land survived the second onslaught of flood early this month, keeping the hope for a good harvest still alive, according to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE).
The Aman crop, including the high yield variety (HYV), was planted in a total of 5.24 million hectares of land against the target of 5.3 million hectares this season but the late floods damaged the Aman plantation in several districts.
The second spell of flood damaged the plantation in 0.44 million hectares of land.
The target for the HYV Aman plantation was 3.8 million hectares while that of local variety 1.5 million hectares.
The northern districts, including Rangpur and Rajshahi achieved the target while Dhaka, Comilla, Chittagong, Barisal zones failed to do so because of the late flood.
DAE sources said the flood damaged rice crops in 230 upazilas in 33 districts.
Farmers this time planted late varieties like Kiran (BR 22) and Dishari (BR 23).
The late varieties of Aman are usually planted by mid-September.
