Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayor Annisul Huq on Friday vowed to resolve the existing problems of his corporation, including water-logging, and said failure of the authorities concerned would not be excused next year.
He also sought cooperation from the lawmakers, the city corporation councilors and the citizens to address major problems, like - waste management, removal of illegal billboards and relocation of truck- and bus-stands from the city.
"It is not possible for the city corporation alone to solve the problems unless the citizens come forward with their support to this effect," the DNCC mayor said.
He was speaking at a views-exchange meeting with MPs, councilors and dignitaries at the city's RAOWA Convention Hall.
There are eight lawmakers under DNCC and 48 councilors, including 12 female and 36 males. But only two MPs - state minister for home affairs Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former home minister Sahara Khatun - were present in the meeting and Iftar Mahfil, hosted by DNCC. Annisul Huq said the city people have lots of expectations. He himself along with his councilors has made commitments to do many things. He called upon all to form public opinion to keep the city clean and make it livable.
Mr Huq said from now on, the process of exchanging two per cent-four per cent commission at corporation office will not work, as none can buy the mayor.
"People want light, security, waste management and removal of billboards, which are damaging the city's environment. But if the city dwellers do not help, even ten mayors cannot manage the waste problem."
He expressed hope of managing 70 per cent waste of DNCC by next March, removing illegal billboards immediately, relocating Karwan Bazar, Gabtoli bus-stand and Tejgaon truck-stand, and stopping indiscipline on roads by the drivers.
Mr Huq also said he has passed only one month and 28 days in the city corporation office. By this time he has visited 31 wards out of 36, and met 4,000 corporation staffs in eight days.
"I have gone four days to a lane at Nakhalpara, but still cannot solve their water problem. This year people will spare us considering our assuming office, but not next year," he added.
Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said it is clear that the mayor will realize everything that he demands. He also said all of the city dwellers want a clean and beautiful city.
Architect Mobashwer Hossain said the city dwellers want many things from the mayor. But unfortunately he is helpless than a commissioner in a municipality in remote areas.
"The mayor is responsible for lighting the city streets, but the light-posts belong to DESA. The city corporation will clean the surface drains, but the water will flow through the storm sewerage drains of WASA, which even does not bother about the mayor."
He suggested that the mayor should be given with more power and bring all the 54 service providing agencies of Dhaka city under one umbrella.
He also called upon the political parties to make commitment to prohibit erection of billboards with images of party leaders to make the city clean and beautiful.
