The price of jersey of Argentina has shot up in the capital following the team's 3-0 victory over Algeria on Wednesday.
Argentina successfully opened the defense of their World Cup title by defeating Algeria 3-0 in their Group J opener at Kansas City Stadium.
Following the victory of Argentina, local cheerful fans of Argentina at different places in the city were expressing their joys and satisfaction.
Supporters of Argentina team in different areas in the city including Jatrabari, Kamalapur, Dolaipar, Malibagh, Khilgaon, Mirpur and Mohammadpur brought out processions welcoming their favourite team's victory over Algeria.
Visiting different markets and shops at Gulistan and Maulana Bashani Hockey Stadium market on Wednesday, the FE correspondent found a significant number of football fans of different ages and professions were busy buying Argentina's jerseys and flags.
Makeshift shops on roadside footpaths at Gulistan, Purana Paltan and Baitul Mukarram areas were also seen selling Argentina team's version jerseys.
Traders at Gulistan said that they had sold a large number of Argentina's jerseys on Wednesday compared to other previous days following the team's victory over Algeria.
"We have increased the price a little bit following demand surge after the Argentine victory over Algeria," Sujan, a salesman of Bangladesh Sports told the FE on Sunday.
"I have purchased Argentina jersey before the start of the World Cup 2026. Now I have purchased four jerseys of my family members," Md Nawshad Ahmed, a businessmen told the FE.
There are two types of jerseys: fan edition jerseys and player edition jerseys.
The most meaningful difference between the two jersey types is in the material.
Fan edition jerseys - sometimes referred to as replica jerseys - are made from a heavier, more affordable polyester mesh. They're designed for comfort and durability during everyday wear: washing them repeatedly, sitting through a two-hour game, or layering them over a hoodie during winter.
Player edition jerseys - also called authentic or on-field jerseys - use the same performance fabric worn by the athletes themselves.
Traders at the shops said that they had sold per piece of Argentina jersey between Tk 1200 and Tk 1,500 on Wednesday which ranged between Tk 900 and Tk 1,000 during the past week.
Md Shaheen, manager of Galaxy Style and Sports at Gulistan, told the FE on Wednesday that sale of Argentina jerseys had surged on Wednesday following an increased demand.
Meanwhile, shopkeepers at makeshifts shops on footpaths and roadsides were also selling jerseys and national flags of Argentina in bigger number compared to previous days.
Md Anwar, a makeshift shop owner at Maulana Bahsani Stadium, told the FE on Wednesday that the demand of Argentina jerseys had surged on Wednesday, compelling them to sell jerseys a little bit high prices as they too had to purchase them at a little bit high price.
He said that the price of an Argentina jersey of relatively low quality ranged between Tk 300 and Tk 400 on Wednesday which was between Tk 250 and Tk 300 during past week.
