The government has deployed army personnel in six key districts and metropolitan areas to help maintain law and order and prevent any acts of sabotage ahead of the founding anniversary of the Awami League, whose activities remain banned.
According to an official letter issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Monday, the deployment began on June 22 and will continue until June 30.
The troops have been deployed in the Dhaka, Chattogram, Gazipur and Narayanganj metropolitan areas, as well as Faridpur and Gopalganj districts.
The army personnel will operate under the "In Aid to Civil Power" framework.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed described the deployment as a routine measure aimed at maintaining public order.
He said the government had received intelligence reports indicating possible "subversive activities" by "some elements of the banned mafia-like Awami League network", alleging that they were attempting to create unrest through rallies and gatherings in different parts of the country.
"All law enforcement agencies have been instructed to remain on maximum alert so that no one can create any kind of disorder," he said.
The minister said that, based on specific intelligence inputs, the army had been deployed to assist the civil administration in preventing sabotage and maintaining public order in the designated areas.
Responding to a question about public confidence in the police, Mr Ahmed said there was "no question of trust or distrust", noting that the force had a strong record of service.
He added that deploying the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) or the army to support police operations when necessary was a regular legal procedure.
