The authorities have finally decided to set up a garrison for a composite army brigade in 140 acres of land beside the Padma Multipurpose Bridge site and the project proposal awaits government approval.
Officials said Monday the Bangladesh Army administration has sought approval for the Tk 9.87 billion project aiming to station the new 99 composite brigade at Mawa and Janjira ends of the bridge site across the river.
The military force said they will set up the composite brigade to ensure security and technical support to the largest bridge in Bangladesh, now under construction.
The government has already started building the US$2.9 billion bridge across the mighty river Padma to connect the capital, Dhaka, with the impoverished south-western Bangladesh.
According to the project proposal, Bangladesh Army will set up its 99 brigade in 100 acres of land at Janjira end and in 40 acres at Mawa point of the bridge.
Officials said the army base is likely to have engineering corps, artillery cops and some other establishments, including barracks for more than 3,300 soldiers, homes for their 560 families and 81 families of officers, an officers' mess and a mosque.
The Planning Commission is scrutinising the project before placing before the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC).
A PC official said first time in early 2014 Bangladesh Army sent the project proposal involving a cost of Tk 14 billion to set up the army base at the two ends of the site.
It sought 325.52 acres of land- 75.75 acres in Mawa and another 249.77 acres in Janjira - for the cantonment.
