An arson victim died and a Chhatra Dal leader was killed on Wednesday, as the countrywide indefinite transport blockade, enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance, passed off 86th day.
Truck driver Imran, 30, who received severe burn injury in Magura truck arson attack last month, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) at 6.0am on Wednesday. With him, the death toll in the attack stood at five.
Dr Partha Shankar Pal, resident surgeon of DMCH burn unit, confirmed his death.
Meanwhile, a local leader of Jatiyotabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) was hacked to death, allegedly by Awami League activists, at Char Goalgram village in Gangni Upazila under Meherpur on Wednesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Haser Ali, 25, a resident of the village and joint secretary of Gangni Upazila unit of JCD, the student wing of BNP.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Gangni Police Station Akram Hossain said a gang of miscreants chopped Haser Ali
indiscriminately and slit his throat on his way to cropland at about 6:00am, leaving him dead on the spot.
Relatives of the deceased said he was killed by local Awami League activists. A case was filed in this connection.
Meanwhile, the latest spell of 48-hour nationwide hartal ended at 6.00am on Wednesday.
In the capital, as well as elsewhere in the country, vehicular movement was normal. A large number of law-enforcers were deployed in different parts of the city to fend off any trouble.
The alliance also called hartal from 6.00am on Thursday, demanding return of missing BNP leaders, including its joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed, to their families.
BNP joint secretary general Barkatullah Bulu, on behalf of the alliance, announced the programme on Tuesday.
