Asaduzzaman joins as new Attorney General

Senior Advocate Md Asaduzzman has been appointed as the new Attorney General of Bangladesh. President Mohammed Shahabuddin has appointed him under his jurisdiction given by Article 64(1) of the Constitution.

Law Secretary Md Golam Sarwar issued a gazette notification to this effect on Thursday. He will hold the post until further order, and the notification will come into effect without any delay.

The new attorney general already joined his office on Thursday afternoon, and received floral greetings from lawyers and other sections of people.

His predecessor A M Amin Uddin resigned from the post on August 7, citing "personal difficulties".

Md Asaduzzaman, an environmentalist lawyer, is the Human Rights Affairs Secretary of BNP. He is a student of batch-17 of Dhaka University's Law Department.

During a briefing he said, "I express gratitude to all the martyrs of the first and second liberation war. I recall the contributions of our legendary political leader of independence Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and declarer of independence martyr president Ziaur Rahman."

The new attorney general also expressed his gratitude to Noble Laureate Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus, who has branded the country to the world, as well as to the people, who contributed to the country's democratic progress.

"My first and foremost duty will be to stand by the people of the country. My duty is to preserve their rights also as the attorney general," he further said during the briefing.

He opined that all the cases filed during the quota reform movement should be withdrawn.
