Australian High Commissioner in Dhaka on Tuesday said his government had decided to lift the ban on direct cargo flights from Bangladesh through amendments to the existing policy of the government.

High Commissioner Jeremy Bruer said this during a meeting with Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh Chairman Air Vice Marshal Mafidur Rahman at the latter's office, said a press release.

In 2016, Australian government imposed a partial ban on operating direct cargo flights to Australia from Egypt, Somalia, Syria, Turkey, Yemen and Bangladesh.

To lift the embargo, the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh had been maintaining dialogues with the Australian government since 2018.

In line with that, an Australian delegation visited Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka in March 2019, to check the security initiatives at the airport for transporting the export-oriented cargos.
