United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has urged Bangladesh authorities and institutions concerned to ensure transparent, inclusive and credible city corporation polls, reports UNB.
"He (Ban) appeals to the authorities in all relevant institutions to ensure that the elections will be transparent, inclusive, and credible," a spokesman of the Secretary General said Saturday.
The Secretary-General is encouraged by the opposition's decision to participate in the city council elections for Dhaka and Chittagong, scheduled for 28 April, said the spokesman.
The UN chief expressed the hope political parties in Bangladesh will soon find a way to overcome their differences for the sake of the country's long-term development and stability.
The United Nations remains fully committed to supporting Bangladesh in that regard, according to the UN website.
In response to questions raised over developments in Bangladesh, the spokesman for the UN Secretary-General said Ban welcomed the de-escalation of violence in Bangladesh in the past weeks.
