Kenya and Uganda have agreed to give lease of land to Bangladesh government for farming, report agencies.
Kenya will offer lands for 99 years at a very cheap price of 19 cents per bigha annually.
The Ugandan authorities informed that they would not charge any fees for lease but Bangladesh government will have to give 20 per cent of products, produced by Bangladeshi farmers there.
President Zillur Rahman was apprised of the developments in this regard by the newly appointed Bangladesh Ambassador to Kenya, Wahidur Rahman, at Bangabhaban in the city Monday. He called on the President ahead of his departure for Kenya.
However, any official agreement in this regard is yet to be signed between Bangladesh and the African nations, he informed.
Bangladesh has a plan to take lease of vast arable lands in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania to produce crops aiming at ensuring its food security as well as creating jobs for its farmers.
He informed the President that a high-profile official delegation recently visited a number of African countries to review scopes for making the nearly unexplored region a destination of Bangladesh's manpower and products.
