Bangladesh won't accept any more Rohingya: FM

Bangladesh cannot take anymore Rohingya refugees, said Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Monday.
Asked whether Bangladesh will allow influx of Rohingya people who reportedly assembled on the border due to the fierce fighting in the Rakhine State of Myanmar, the minister categorically said, 'This is impossible for us as we are already burdened with the over 1 million Rohingyas who are causing various problems for the country."
The minister was talking to a group of journalists in the foreign affairs ministry.
They are creating severe negative impact on the host community, the minister said adding that many Rohingya people are involved in drug trade and human trafficking.
Many of them are lured by the militant groups posing security threat for the region, the minister said.
Despite hectic efforts, the pilot repatriation of the Rohingyas could not be made possible due to the ongoing conflicts in Myanmar, he added.
Even the Myanmar army is not safe in the places where Rohingyas are supposed to be repatriated, the minister said adding that many Myanmar security personnel flee to Bangladesh in the face of the attack by the insurgents.
Responding to another question, he said the situation in Kyrgyzstan is calm now and the Bangladeshi students staying there are safe. "Our Ambassador there will visit the university campus where tension mounted recently and we will take steps as per his recommendations," the minister said.
