Banks, NBFIs get 9 days of Eid holiday

Some banks in RMG zones to remain open Mar 28-29

The commercial banks and Non- Bank Financial Institutions (NBFI) will remain closed for nine straight days amid Eid-ul-Fitr this year, from Mar 28-Apr 5, report agencies.

Some banks in the garment industry zones, however, will remain open to facilitate paying "salaries, allowances and bonuses" to the workers on Mar 28 and Mar 29, according to a Bangladesh Bank notification issued on Monday.

Among them are apparel industry zones located in Dhaka city, Ashulia, Tongi, Gazipur, Savar, Bhaluka, Narayanganj and Chattogram.

It read that all branches and sub-branches of scheduled banks would remain shut on Apr 3 due to the government holiday declared by an executive order for the Eid.

According to the directive, bank branches open on Friday, Mar 28 would operate from 10am to 3pm.

Transaction would be done from 10am to 12pm.

On Saturday, the branches would remain open from 10am to 2pm while transactions would continue from 10am to 1pm.

The central bank instructed authorities to ensure proper security to the branches that would remain open during this period, and payment to officers or employees on duty on holidays as per the rules.

The notification added that branches, sub-branches and booths located near port and customs areas would remain open all day round-the-week.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Bank has announced April 3 as a holiday for the NBFI same as the government employees.

The Financial Institutions and Markets Department of Bangladesh Bank issued the notification on Monday.

It said the Ministry of Public Administration has declared April 3 (Thursday) as a public holiday on the occasion of the upcoming holy Eid-ul-Fitr. Finance companies, like government institutions, will also be closed on that day.
