FE Report
The Energy and Mineral Resources Division (EMRD) is likely to engage the domestic gas exploration and production companies for discovery of new gas fields.
The state-owned Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Ltd (BAPEX) has already initiated a plan to conduct gas exploration activities in two new prospective structures at Kapasia and Srikail to discover commercial deposits of gas, a senior EMRD official told the FE.
He said the company has already completed three-dimension (3D) seismic surveys identifying them as prospective ones.
Before commencement of exploration activities in these structures, the BAPEX has decided to involve the Petroleum Authority of Thailand Exploration and Production Company (PTTEP) to analyse the seismic data.
The state-run Petrobangla has already contacted with the Thai PTTEP for scrutinising the seismic data.
"The PTTEP will analyse the seismic data free of cost in line with the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Petrobangla and the PTTEP on energy cooperation," a Petrobangla top official said.
The BAPEX's experts will also scrutinise the seismic data before conducting exploration activities in two new structures.
Sources said, the BAPEX had conducted exploration at Srikail in 2004 but failed to discover commercial gas due to drilling at a faulty location. Yet the then BAPEX top brass declared gas discovery there.
EMRD sources said the BAPEX was given approval by the government as an exploration and production company in February 2000 and subsequently got the ownership of Saldanadi and Fenchuganj gas fields for exploration.
Production from the BAPEX developed gas field was initiated in July 2001 with the start of gas production from the Saldanadi gas field.
