Bashundhara MD exempted from rape, killing charges


Eight accused, including Bashundhara Group Managing Director Sayem Sobhan Anvir, have been exempted from the charges of rape and murder of college student Mosarat Jahan Munia.
Judge of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-8 in Dhaka, Shawkat Ali, on Wednesday rejected a 'no confidence petition' filed by Munia's sister Nusrat Jahan Tania on the final report submitted by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) clearing Anvir and seven other people of the charges.
The tribunal also took into cognisance the report submitted by the PBI.
The seven other accused who got exemption from the case are Anvir's father Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, mother Afroza Sobhan, wife Sabrina Sobhan, showbiz models Faria Mahbub Piasha and Saifa Rahman Mim, Munia's flat owner Ibrahim Ahmed Ripon and his wife Sharmim Akhter.
Lawyer Abdur Rahman Howlader who appeared in the court hearing for on behalf of Anvir and other accused confirmed the information.
According to the case document, police on April 26, 2021 recovered the body of Munia hanging from a ceiling fan at a rented flat at Gulshan in Dhaka.
Munia's sister Nusrat filed a case against Anvir on the same night, accusing him of abetment to suicide.
Police found no involvement of Anvir in the death and submitted the final report to the court on July 19, 2021, giving a clean chit to the key accused.
On September 6, 2021, Nusrat filed another case with the Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-8. The PBI submitted the final report in the case on October 19, 2023.
On January 1, 2023, Nusrat filed the petition expressing no confidence in the PBI's final report and sought further investigation in the case, alleging that the PBI did not conduct their investigation properly.
Upon hearing the 'no confidence petition' the tribunal on rejected it.
Barrister M Sarwar Hossain, lawyer of the plaintiff, said they will file an appeal petition against the order.
