FE Report
The Bangladesh Bank (BB) has directed all banks to submit information about the bank accounts and the financial statements of 198 individuals including high profile political leaders by August 08.
The central bank has already sent the list of the persons to the commercial banks asking the authorities concerned to provide such information within the stipulated timeframe.
"We have asked the banks to submit their reports relating to the bank accounts of the individuals within the time limit," a BB senior official told the FE Sunday.
He also said there is no relation between freezing the bank accounts and this order. Freezing the accounts of same individuals by the national board of revenue (NBR) was a different issue, he added.
The leaders include Awami League (AL) general secretary Abdul Jalil, AL presidium member Tofail Ahmed, Dhaka City Corporation Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka, Krishak Sramik Janata League president Kader Siddique, Rajshahi City Corporation Mayor Mazanur Rahman Minu, Khulana City Corporation Mayor Sheikh Tayebur Rahman, BNP senior joint secretary general Tarique Rahman and AL president Sheikh Hasina's son Sajib Wazed Joy.
On August 02 last, the NBR asked all commercial banks and non-banking financial institutions (NBFIs) to freeze accounts of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her five family members. It also ordered to freeze accounts of 49 other individuals and organisations.
