The central bank issued on Monday show-cause notices on 20 officials involved in holding a demonstration in front of its main building before the board meeting on the previous day.
"We've issued the show-cause notices against the officials involved in such unruly activities in line with our top management decision," a senior official of the Bangladesh Bank (BB) told the FE.
Among the officials, 11 are deputy general managers (DGMs), six joint directors (JDs) and three deputy directors (DDs) of the central bank.
The central banker also said the officials will have to clarify their positions within three days after receiving the notices.
The officials along with their colleagues staged the demonstration in front of the central bank's main building from 12 pm to 1:30 pm on Sunday without seeking permission from the authorities concerned, the show-cause notice said.
They also created obstacles to the directors while they were entering the building to attend the meeting, and forced them to receive copies of a letter with an illogical statement, it added.
The board of directors expressed its annoyance over their activities and asked the authorities concerned for taking necessary administrative measures against the officials, the notice mentioned.
The BB also observed that activities of the officials were against the principle of the central bank and these tarnished its image.
The central bank issued the notice under sections 19(1), 42 and 44 of the Bangladesh Bank Staff Regulation, 2003.
On Sunday, a large number of BB officials staged the demonstration in front of the central bank main building before the board meeting, protesting an initiative of hiring a general manager (GM) for the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) on contractual basis.
Earlier, the officials also requested the BB governor not to appoint any GM for the BFIU on contractual basis bypassing a regular GM of the central bank.
The central bank, however, took the decision at the board of directors meeting to hire the GM on contractual basis for strengthening functions of its BFIU.
