CHITTAGONG, Feb 14: Bangladesh Bank's Chittagong office is running with less than the required number of officials and employees in different categories.
Due to the shortage of manpower the people are not getting due services from the only central bank office in the city.
Account holders, mainly the female customers, have to wait for several hours to get their monthly and quarterly interest amounts paid against deposits in the different savings accounts.
Official data shows that 397 posts against the sanctioned strength of 868 59 categories from executive director to the MLSS grade-2 (vault darwan) are lying vacant. The actual strength of workforce now stands at 511.
Even the post of general manager at the Chittagong office has been remaining vacant for many years.
The biggest number of posts are lying at the mid-level - assistant director (AD) or assistant manager (general). Only 30 male and 8 female officers in the AD rank have been working against the sanctioned strength of 159. As many as 121 posts of officers in the AD rank are lying vacant, as per data of the BB.
In the officer (general) rank only six officers including a female one are working against the sanctioned strength of 117 officers, leaving 111 posts of officers vacant.
About 52 assistant manager (cash) posts remain vacant as only 40 officers in the post are working against the sanctioned 92 posts.
Around 23 posts of deputy director or deputy manager (general) against the sanctioned strength of 103, about 17 cash officers against sanctioned strength of 49 and 11 coin/note examiners (grade 2) against sanctioned strength of 33 remain vacant.
On the contrary, 62 senior officers in the rank of joint director or joint manager (general) are working against the sanctioned strength of 47 JD.
Against the sanctioned 8 posts of DGM-general (deputy general manager), 13 are working currently. They include one female DGM.
When contacted, executive director of Bangladesh Bank's, Chittagong office Md Mizanur Rahman Joddar said authority concerned in Dhaka was aware that the posts were lying vacant.
"We are not facing that much trouble due to that as we have managed the vacant posts with redundant persons in some of the mid-level posts," he told this correspondent on Thursday.
