BD diplomat back for possessing cannabis

A Bangladesh diplomat in Indonesia has been called back home for possessing drug, state minister for foreign affairs M Shahriar Alam tells the mass media.

Bangladesh is embarrassed at the allegations of possessing marijuana against its deputy chief of mission Kazi Anarkoly.

Foreign ministry received a complaint against her for cannabis possession and indiscipline while she was in Indonesia, according to ministry officials.

Terming the incident 'embarrassing and unfortunate', Mr Alam on Tuesday said the ministry would conduct a thorough investigation against the diplomat.

If the allegation is proved, he adds, necessary steps will be taken against her as per law.

According to sources, the Indonesian law enforcement agency conducted a raid on Ms Anarkoly's residence in South Jakarta last month and found cannabis there.

However, she was not arrested as she was granted diplomatic immunity under the Vienna Convention.
