Bangladesh received foreign assistance amounting to $ 24 billion from various countries and development partners in the last nine years, Finance Minister AMA Muhith told the Jatiya Sangsad on Tuesday, reports UNB.

"The disbursed amount of foreign assistance for the country's development works was $ 24,157.64 million (US$ 24.16 billion) from various countries and donor agencies from 2008-'09 fiscal year to 2016-'17 fiscal year," he said replying to a starred question from Awami League Member of Parliament (MP) Nurunnabi Chowdhury (Bhola-3).

Of the disbursed amount, $ 18,559.83 million was received as loan, while the remaining $ 5,597.81 million as donation, said the finance minister.

He said Bangladesh received the highest $7,361.68 million from IDA (World Bank) during the period, while $6,183.24 million from the Asian Development Bank (ADB),

$2,957.59 million from Japan, $1,830.04 million from UN agencies, $993.27 million from China, $455.22 million from IDB, $416.65 million from Russia, $350.73 million from South Korea and $3,801.11 million from other countries and donor agencies.

Replying to another question, the finance minister told parliament that the enlistment of schools under the Monthly Pay Order (MPO) is not a good programme for the development of education.

He, however, said fund has been allocated in the national budget for bringing schools under the MPO in the current fiscal year (2018-'19).

The (enlistment of schools) MPO is a very bad programme which we had taken once upon a time. And we have been continuing it," said Muhith replying to a supplementary question from Tarikat Federation chairman Syed Nazibul Bashar Maizvandary, MP.

The finance minister said there are many good programmes for the development of education such as stipend for students and school-feeding and providing education materials.

Muhith asked the MPs to change their attention from the MPO programme to school-feeding one.
