The population size of Bangladesh is 169.82 million as per the adjusted population report of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics.
It was revealed at the final session of the Post Enumeration Check (PEC) of the Population and Household Census (PHC) 2022 event, organised by BBS at the National Economic Council in Dhaka on Sunday.
Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) conducted the PEC of the census.
Earlier, BBS conducted the census in June 2022 and published the primary report in July the same year under the Population and Household Census project which has been framed for 2021-2024 period.
As per the BBS primary report, the population was 165.1 million.
BIDS was appointed for the PEC of the census later last year, and it found 2.75 per cent Net Coverage Error (NCE) - the numbers were adjusted by BBS in the final report.
As per the BIDS' PEC, the country's population between 2011 and 2022 showed a 19.4 per cent surge as it reached above 169.82 million.
Urban population has also increased to 31.7 per cent in the latest census marking nearly a 4.0 percentage point surge in 2022 compared to that of the last census done in 2011.
Productive population aged between 15 and 35 comprises 25 per cent of the population and this is very positive for the economy, said Planning Minister Md Abdul Mannan.
BIDS Director General Dr Binayak Sen said the number of suburban people has increased notably - a phenomenon that requires discussion.
State Minister for Planning Shamsul Alam said the work of BBS has gradually been improving.
He said the government is working on how to give an updated population data every year.
Statistics and Information Division Secretary Dr Shahnaj Arefin, BBS Director General Md Matiur Rahman and PHC Project Director Md Dildar Hossain, among others, spoke.
According to the census, Dhaka division is most populous with 45.64 million or 26.88 per cent of the total population followed by Chattogram 20.13, Rajshahi 12.24, Rangpur 10.61, and Khulna 10.49 per cent.
Barishal has the least 9.32 million or 5.49 per cent of the total population.
