The foreign ministry lodged a strong protest against a "highly deplorable" comment made by Indian home minister Amit Shah on Bangladeshi nationals.
Mr Amit made the remarks during his recent visit to the election-bound Jharkhand state.
On Friday, he threatened to deal with Bangladeshi infiltrators in Jharkhand by hanging them upside down once the BJP forms a government in Jharkhand, according to media reports.
Through a protest note handed over on Monday to the Indian deputy high commissioner in Dhaka, the ministry conveyed its serious reservations, deep sense of hurt and extreme displeasure.
Dhaka called upon Delhi to advise its political leaders to refrain from making such objectionable and unacceptable remarks.
It also emphasised that such remarks, coming from responsible positions against the nationals of Bangladesh, undermine the spirit of mutual respect and understanding between the two friendly countries, said a foreign ministry spokesperson.
