Foreign minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Saturday called upon the international community to raise support and sympathy for the Palestinians.

Addressing the 19th NAM Summit hosted in the Ugandan capital of Kampala, he sought the peaceful settlement of disputes and promotion of culture of peace, said a foreign ministry spokesperson.

Dr Mahmud, who led the Bangladesh delegation, reiterated his country's unwavering support for the oppressed Palestinians and demanded justice for them.

He urged the world community to stand by the war-ravaged Palestinians and use all tools available to support their cause.

The minister also urged all concerned to redouble their efforts to ensure a sustainable solution to the Rohingya issue.

He underscored the need for a non-confrontational as well as constructive dialogue to promote peaceful, just and inclusive societies.

The two-day event, opened on Friday by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni as the new NAM chair, is expected to adopt an outcome document, Kampala Declaration and a declaration on Palestine.

In his speech, Dr Mahmud referred to the statement of the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the NAM Summit in Algiers in 1973.

He highlighted that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was carrying forward Bangabandhu's legacy of peace, development and human rights with courage and determination.

Meanwhile, on the sidelines of the summit, Dr Mahmud held a meeting with his Myanmar counterpart Than Swe.

They discussed the Rohingya repatriation and other issues of importance between the two countries.
