Benazir seeks time from ACC

FE REPORT | June 06, 2024 00:00:00

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed has sought time from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to appear before it for quizzing.

According to sources, the ACC asked Benazir to appear on June 06 and his family on June 09 over graft allegations and amassing huge wealth beyond known sources of income.

Benazir filed a petition with the watchdog seeking time through his lawyer, said ACC commissioner (investigation) Md Jahurul Haque on Wednesday.

At a briefing, he said, "I've heard that Benazir has sought time from the investigation team concerned. I don't know how much time he has sought."

On June 04, Mr Haque told the media that if Benazir did not appear on June 06, the ACC would assume that he had nothing to say over the allegations.

However, if he seeks time, the investigator may grant him the highest 15 days' time.

On May 28, the ACC summoned Benazir and his family members to quiz over graft allegations and amassing huge properties beyond known sources of income.

The move came days after a Dhaka court on May 23 ordered the authorities concerned to confiscate properties of Benazir and his family members.

It ordered them to impound properties under 83 deeds of 114 acres of land and freeze 33 bank accounts opened in the names of Benazir and his family members.

Three days later, the same court ordered the authorities concerned to confiscate assets under 119 more deeds in connection with alleged corruption.

It also directed them to confiscate eight wholly-owned and 15 partially-owned properties of Benazir, his wife Jissan Mirza and three daughters.

On April 18, the anti-graft watchdog decided to open an enquiry into the allegations of amassing illegal wealth by Benazir, which was reported by a Bangla daily.

It also formed a three-member panel to probe the allegations.

However, sources said Benazir departed Dhaka on May 04 before the court orders were passed.
