BGB seizes 2.1m Yaba tablets in Teknaf

COX'S BAZAR, Mar 16: Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) in separate drives recovered 2.1 million pieces of contraband Yaba tablets from three spots in Teknaf upazila on Friday.

The market value of recovered Yaba tablets is Tk 570 million, sources said.

Sources said acting on a tip-off, a BGB patrol team challenged an engine-driven boat in Jina canal at

Sabrang union and seized 1,302,000 pieces of Yaba tablets from the boat early Friday. Sensing the presence of BGB men, smugglers managed to escape from the boat.

In another drive, BGB patrol team recovered 500,897 pieces of Yaba tablets after searching a Cox's Bazar-bound passenger bus in Damdamia area early Friday. BGB men also arrested Sheik Ahmed (28) who hails from Myanmar, BGB said.

On the other hand, BCG members in a separate drive recovered 300,000 pieces of Yaba tablets from an engine-driven boat at Sera Dweep of St Martin's Island on Friday morning.

Sensing the presence of BCG men, smugglers threw plastic-made sacks of Yaba tablets into the sea and managed to flee the spot in their boat.

Lt Col Asadud Zaman Chowdhury, Commanding Officer of BGB-2 battalion in Teknaf, confirmed the matter. The seized tablets were deposited with the battalion headquarters for further action, he said.
