BGMEA moves to tap potential apparel mkts

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has taken a number of steps to tap potential overseas apparel markets.
Salam Chowdhury, chairman of the Trade Fair of the BGMEA, said while exchanging views with newsmen at the premises of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) Tuesday.
He said Bangladeshi apparel exporters have been exploring markets not only in Europe and the US but also looking for opportunity in Africa and Latin American countries.
Salam said the BGMEA is currently holding a fair in Cape Town of South Africa to attract the African buyers for the Bangladeshi apparel products.
He said Canada, Australia, Japan and New Zealand have already given Bangladesh zero duty facility. "We can exploit those markets very efficiently," Salam said.
He said the BGMEA tries to attend jointly-organised international trade fairs as such fairs are more useful than single country fair.
He said the BGMEA in collaboration with South Asia Enterprise Development Facility (SEDF) has been running some training programmes for officials and employees at different levels on various issues.
He said Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) recently completed training for the mid-level officials on compliance issue.
